Substance abuse is a serious disease that impacts behavior and brain function. Addictive disorders are also often connected to other mental health illnesses; therefore, making an accurate diagnosis of all issues related to drug and alcohol abuse critical and essential for a successful recovery. The initial substance abuse evaluation and assessment of the patient is crucial to creating an individualized treatment plan that is effective and has the goal of life-long recovery.
Our team of chemical dependency counselors and professionals will help you or your loved one receive the confidential assessment needed to determine the best plan forward. Following the guidelines of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, our board-certified addiction medicine physicians and addiction specialists perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine each patient’s specific needs.
What to Expect From Your Substance Abuse Evaluation
Medical symptoms and history
Our rehabilitation team of experts will review physical illnesses that are independent of or related to substance abuse.
Substance use
What is the root of the substance abuse? Our team will proceed with a comprehensive interview that helps the individual understand the severity of his/her illness and commit to receiving help if the disorder is present. Components of the data gathered during the interview may include information on prior treatments, substances used, prior efforts to quit, effects of use and all associated problems. The negative impact substance use has had on relationships, work, studies, finances, personal health or safety, and overall goal achievement will also be reviewed.
Psychiatric or psychological symptoms and history
Mental illness and psychiatric disorders or symptoms of co-occurring disorders are evaluated in all patients. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. are assessed to understand the problem, its relation to the patient’s addiction and the best approach for treatment.
Family, employment and legal issues
Understanding all the dynamics surrounding addiction plays a key role in recovery. Our therapists and chemical dependency counselors provide services or referrals for legal assistance, life skills training, family counseling or employment issues.
